Caigua is a typical thin climbing plant of South America. In South America: the fruits are eaten, raw or cooked, or stewed with meat, fish or cheese. Caigua is currently grown in the Caribbean, Central and South America.

There are about 30 species of Cyclanthera that, although they are native to temperate and tropical regions, can also withstand cold climates and can be found in the mountains of South America up to 2000m in height.

Caigua and, more specifically, its seeds contain 28-30 amino acids as a group of trypsin inhibitors. The leaves of the plant contain two malonil derivs. The fruits contain flavonoid glycosides, including four new previously unknown flavonoids that in laboratory tests, have shown antioxidant effects.
Overall in caigua are elements such as phenols, peptine, galacturonic acid, picrina, lipoproteins, flavonoids, glycosides, mucilage, alkaloids, lipids, tannins, terpenes, resin, carbohydrate, sterol scoparina, vitamins, vitexina, minerals.

Research conducted in Peru reported that the caigua can lower cholesterol levels in humans. A study conducted on 60 patients over a year, reported a lowering of LDL-cholesterol by an average of 18.3% and HDL-cholesterol by 23% nell'82% of patients. Another study of 29 patients over 10 days had similar results with a decrease in total cholesterol of 21.1%. The studies have not documented drug interactions, contraindications or side effects.

Besides this function of cholesterol lowering, there is also used as a hypotensive in Peruvian herbal medicine. The fruits and seeds of caigua are also used for intestinal parasites and gastrointestinal problems. The leaves are being considered to help in lowering the level of glucose in the blood and prepared as decoctions for diabetes. The fruit is also used for tonsillitis, arteriosclerosis, circulatory problems, diabetes and as a diuretic. The fruit and / or the leaves are then boiled in olive oil and used externally as anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Finally, the root is used to clean the teeth.
